Cool Combat March 16: Interest Thread

Post  Cleaver on Wed Mar 06, 2013 7:42 pm

So, I know given the next 2 weekends are spring break, and therefore we probably won't have a ton of people around.

That said, to those that are around (or are willing to come back a bit early), who all would be interested in driving down to Cool Combat? Tossed the idea around to a few people and there seems to be some interest, so I figured I'd see how many people we could draw.

It's a CQB field in NC (Lexington, specifically). Google Maps puts our drive at under 2.5 hours to get there, and they are open 10am-6pm. They are open on Sundays too...1:30 to 6pm.
Full face protection and full seal goggles are required.
FPS limits: 355 with .2, 315 with .25; they also make note that steel, glass, AND BIO BBs are not allowed.
$20 for all day play.

I've always wanted to try CQB personally, and this venue actually was well recommended by a few people on NC Airsoft Forums. Plus, it gives us a good warm-up for Trident Hammer the following weekend.

So...anyone interested?

The guys from the former ROD1 team at Cool Combat. The surrender they perform is quite hilarious! Two of these guys are CH members

Relevent info:

Rule # 2 :
All Players must wear Full Seal Eye Protection and Full Face Protection "at all times" while inside the Playing Field.

* For Players under 18, the full face protection “should” be a full face plastic mask. For Players 18 and over, full face protection can be a full face toboggan, balaclava or a bandana tied so that it covers the face, or a screen mesh mask.

Good stuff today. Not something I'd want to do super often, but we definitely need to try to get a larger group up there one weekend...

Guys when people upload their pics and video we should upload them to the public page so the world can see us being awesome. As well as uploading them here.

As soon as I find some good freeware software to cut down the video with (because Windows Movie Maker is teh fail) I'll have something up.

Quick AAR:

The facility was really nice. Good, open staging area with plenty of space. All structures are on one floor, save a few elevated positions, which I like. Facility was made up of 5 rooms of varying sizes. Each had plenty of cover and rooms. The only thing I didn't like is that the points BETWEEN each room could get really choked up.

Which leads me to my second point: Final registered numbers for the day was about 115. Save for a few surprise rear-entry "paratrooper drops", this meant that it was a real grind to get past these choke points. It was incredibly difficult to kill opponents fast enough to make any leeway, because there was always 15 dudes behind them. Spawn locations weren't the issue, it was simply that enemy forces would replenish before you could kill off what was there. If ACVT went back (which we should) I would recommend NOT going on a structured game day. I think it would be more enjoyable with less people.

MED rules were also...dubious at best. I understand it's the nature of the beast and that there's not much that can be done, but that doesn't mean I still can't dislike it a bit. It became way too easy for people to camp rooms and simply "safety kill" anyone that walked through the door, which also led to a lot of mexican standoff type scenarios. While the technical allowed safety kill distance was 5 feet, this got fudged quite a bit. The more sportsmanlike of the player base would typically accept the safety kill if you had a clear drop on them (I never had an issue), however some would dispute if they felt you were even a touch outside of 5 feet. Once again...nature of the beast, but it got a bit ridiculous sometimes.

All that said, I still had a really good time. The staff was excellent, fair, and helpful, and clearly paid attention to what was going on to ensure the safety of the players. Ultimately, it's a facility I would recommend going to again.

Sidenote: I highly...HIGHLY...recommend investing in a paintball mask that covers damn near everything. Eyes, mouth, chin, nose, ears, etc. You'll thank me later.
