HopUp stuck in barrel

Post  kalak on Thu Nov 15, 2012 2:20 pm

I've found out what's happened to my Ares G36 - the buckling, barrel and hopup are all kins of fubar right now. I can get the barrel out, but it's no longer "hooked" to the hopup, same with the buckling. I can't get the hopup out without breaking it. I need to twist it before pulling it out, and I'll need to fit vice grips or something equally as destructive.

1. Any other ideas before I rip this out?
2. Suggestions as to what I should replace the hopup and buckling with? I have a spare hopup and buckling from a Sig 552 that's become my "broken gun" (stock broken, battery compartment too cramped for what I want, etc.), and from what I've gathered hopups are universal, but not equal in quality
3. Now that I have this apart, and will probably be buying parts for it, suggestions as to what is a simple upgrade to get some longer and consistent range? I don't really want to take the gearbox apart though.

Just to clarify:

The barrel comes out, but you can't take the bucking out? That's a fair problem to have. I don't understand what you mean by the "hop up getting stuck".

What I've done before to get the rubber out is to completely disassemble the hop up unit. This will give you access to the rubber at the point where the nub usually pushes down upon it. Then I'll take a small hex key and push it down. This will give you a small lip to grab with needle nose pliers. Bucking rubber is surprisingly resilient, just be slow and careful with it as you pull it out. Get as much surface area from the needle nose pliers as you can on the rubber to prevent tearing.

The rubber came out with some needle nose pliers. The barrel is out, the rubber buckling os out, but the hopup is still in the gun, and it's supposed to just "come out" after you turn it. It won't turn.
